Heard about Kundalini Tantra Yoga, but not sure what is that, anyway? Why do we practice it? And what’s with all the sex stuff? You’ve been asking these questions many times, right? Okay, then you’ve reached the right spot.
Kundalini Tantra yoga is one of the oldest, most complex and powerful forms of yoga in the world. It has been passed down by oral tradition from teacher to student for over 5,000 years. Tantra Yoga focuses on all aspects of life: physical, mental and spiritual health.
The goal of tantric yoga is to create harmony between body and mind, leading to a state where one can lead a fulfilling life free from suffering.
This blog will explore in detail about tantra yoga, what it is, tantra yoga poses and much more.
So, let’s get started!
What Is Kundalini Tantric Yoga?
Kundalini Tantra yoga is a discipline. It combines various elements - meditation, mantra chanting, yoga exercises, and sexual pleasure to harness energies in the body. Tantra has five branches: Mantrayana (mantra), Yoga, Haṭha (yoga postures), Laya (“mystic dance”), and Kriya (ritual actions).
These disciplines are generally employed by the practitioner alone or sometimes with a partner. The ultimate goals of Tantra yoga include enlightenment/liberation as well as material benefits such as wealth, health and so on.
The most important aspect of a kundalini tantra yoga practice is that the two energies of male and female must be brought together as a single current. One cannot just exist on one side or the other; rather, they have to be balanced, unified.
Whether the energy is seen as coming from Kundalini Shakti, prana, mana, elan vital, orgone, etc., it should become actualized within us at all levels so that we can bring down the heavens into our body/minds and transform ourselves into pure vessels for real spiritual transformation by means of tantric practices.
Tantra Yoga has more functions than just physical fitness. It aims to connect body and mind, leading to a state of total consciousness which leads to better health and overall happiness.
Know About Kundalini Tantra Yoga Mantras
Tantric mantras are sacred sound formulas used in tantra meditation which is a means of raising energy and consciousness. Kundalini tantra yoga is a meditative tradition that has existed for thousands of years and relies on the use of mantras, mudras (hand gestures) and yantras (sacred geometric patterns/figures), along with visualizations to achieve its goals. Attaining enlightenment is the ultimate goal in many tantric traditions.
Mantras are typically chanted aloud or silently repeated as part of a meditation practice though they can also be written down or recorded for later use if one finds it convenient.
A mantra may be given by a teacher to his student or it may come out of an individual’s own mystical experiences or insights into reality.
Practicing Tantra Yoga, Is Tantra Yoga Related To Sexual Activity?
The benefits of practicing kundalini tantra yoga are not limited to those who have practiced it for years. This type of yoga will lead to more robust and healthy life. In addition, the benefits of this type of yoga also focus on an improvement in your sexual stamina as well as heightening the intensity of orgasms.
But it’s purely not the sex thing as there are a lot of misconceptions based on this. We’ve all heard that Tantra Yoga has to do with sex, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. It actually means “linking together” (Tantra) and focuses on achieving mental clarity through mindfulness, breathing, and meditation exercises.
Kundalini tantra yoga and tantric sex are the two branches of the same tree. Tantric sex is categorized into red tantra, and white tantra, where red tantra focuses on sexual practice and white tantra is practecing yoga by self without including a partner (solo yoga).
The core part of both these tantric types is the sexual energy and utilising it at its full. Studies show that one needs to master white tantra first, which will help you practice red tantra and reach its heights.
There are positions in Tantra yoga where partners share physical and mental intimacy with one another. These intimate sessions can be a form of worship or simply an expression of love between two people. In the ancient Indian texts on tantra, these poses were considered to be very powerful means for spiritual enlightenment and self-realization.
Does Kundalini Tantra Yoga Need A Partner To Practice?
Tantric yoga can be practiced with or without someone else for different goals and benefits. The goal of solo Tantra Yoga is to reach higher levels of meditation through physical endurance, breath work, focus and awareness of the present moment as you move from pose to pose (Kraft). With this form of Tantra Yoga, you will still be able to experience the physical and emotional benefits that come with a partner’s help.
Whether you do it alone or with your partner, understanding is the key practice for a successful doing of Trantic yoga positions.
Kundalini Tantra Yoga Poses To Look At
As you begin to practice solo Tantra Yoga, you can start out in small, easy-to-reach poses such as cat and cow. An example of an easy level pose is “the butterfly”.
In this kundalini tantra yoga pose, you lie down flat on your stomach, then arch your back and swing one of your legs up. It is best if you keep your shoulders on the ground throughout the pose. The movements in this pose are similar to an actual butterfly because butterflies use their wings to fly. This is one way that we can connect movement with breath and awareness.
Moving on to tantra yoga with a partner, you can enjoy a couple of different positions; the main two are Yab-Yum and the more advanced position called “the wheel.” Both of these involve lying back next to each other.
The most challenging position is “the wheel” which involves rolling sides to side, balancing on one hand and one foot off the ground, and inversion. This makes it quite difficult for beginners since bad balance is involved (Reeves). As you progress, building up your strength and endurance will make this easier to achieve.
In the Kundalini Tantra Yoga sequence with another person, both partners lie facing each other in a position known as Yab-Yum. One partner holds their hands above their head while the other’s arms are wrapped around them beneath their hands, elbow to elbow. They can entwine their legs and close their eyes.
Both partners are encouraged to exhale together and inhale at the same time in a process called ‘gazing.’ This helps with the flow of energy between both people.
As you practice these kundalini tantra yoga poses as a couple, you will notice that your breathing becomes synchronized very quickly. As you continue to inhale and exhale together, it is important to focus on each other’s breath as well as yours while keeping steady eye contact.
The longer you spend in this position, the more synchronized you become; however, don’t overstay since this could lead to boredom or less benefits.
